Today being St. Crispin’s Day, it seems only right to share, once again, one of the most famous speeches in English literature—Henry V’s “Crispin’s Day” speech which was given prior to the battle of Agincourt, as penned by Shakespeare in his history, Henry V.

0:10.8	So today's poem is by William Shakespeare.
0:15.5	And it's not so much a poem as it is a poetic speech in verse.
0:23.3	His very famous St. Crispin's Day speech from his history play Henry V.
0:30.1	I'll read it just once today, and before I do a few words about the day referenced in this
0:36.8	very well-known speech.
0:39.1	St. Crispin's Day was traditionally the Feast Day commemorating two saints,
0:47.7	Crispin and Crispian or Crispinian or Crispinus and Crispinian.
0:59.3	They were brothers and shoemakers.
1:05.8	Thought to have lived sometime in the late two hundreds.
1:10.5	They were martyred,
1:15.5	beheaded during the reign and great persecution of Emperor Diocletian.
1:21.9	And they came to be the patron saints of cobblers and leather tanners and other common laborers.
1:34.4	And on their feast day, October 25th, it was customary for all such laborers to have the day off in England, thus the reference to the men doing no work at the beginning of the speech.

1:54.0	The brothers were Roman by birth, and they traveled to Gaul to preach the gospel, supporting their
2:02.6	selves by practicing their trade.
2:05.4	It was there that they caught the attention of the regional governor, who had them tortured,
2:14.4	beaten, thrown into a river with millstones tied around their necks.
2:19.2	When they survived that, he had them sent to Rome where they were beheaded by the emperor.
