Coming close to dying sounds terrible, but honestly, near-death experiences sound kind of amazing.

Only a fraction of people who survive a heart-stopping medical crisis report one of these incidents,

but those who do often tell tantalizing stories of floating above their own bodies, communing

with benevolent entities, and enjoying a complete absence of anxiety.

investigate these accounts. That is changing, but the fact remains that near-death experiences are

devilishly challenging to study. Rachel Neuer is a science

journalist and author. Her article, lifting the veil on near-death experiences, appears in

Scientific American. Rachel, welcome back to think. Thank you so much for having me.

We should start with what counts as a near-death experience. It's more than just coming close to dying, right?

I mean, plenty of people survive a brush with death, but don't report any kind of unusual

perceptual experience associated with that. For sure. So near-death experiences have been reported

across time and cultures, but as you pointed out, not everybody

who survives a brush with death does have one of these experiences. That said, I was really surprised

when I learned just how prevalent these experiences are. An estimated 5 to 10 percent of the general
