Summary

Thinking about hiring a functional medicine doctor? Before you book that first appointment, you need to be prepared. Functional medicine is a whole different game—it’s an investment of time, energy, and money. If you go in expecting a quick fix, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment. Functional medicine doctors don’t have a magic wand to undergo a terrible lifestyle. That work is on you. This episode is your functional medicine prep kit—everything you need to know and do before you commit to the process. Because any functional medicine doctor worth their salt does NOT take insurance, and the costs go way beyond the consult. Labs, supplements, and treatments like peptides can add up fast, so you need to know what you're signing up for and you need to come in as prepared as possible. More importantly, you need to take ownership of your health. No doctor—functional or otherwise—can do the work for you. If you’re not ready to lift weights, fix your metabolic health, and make real lifestyle changes, functional medicine won’t save you. Before you invest your time and money, tune in and get equipped with the right tools to get the most out of functional medicine. Topics Covered: Functional vs. allopathic medicine models   The problem with the “pill for every ill” mindset, even if it’s natural   Metabolic compromise, insulin resistance & mold exposure   Why weightlifting is non-negotiable for health   The impact of diet, nutrition, and lifestyle   Sunshine, stress management, and recovery tools like red light therapy & sauna   On This Episode We Cover:  00:00:00 - Introduction  00:00:47 - Functional vs allopathic medicine  00:07:06 - “A pill for every ill” 00:08:30 - Metabolic compromise & insulin resistance  00:11:18 - Mold exposure & building resilience   00:12:34 - Price of functional doctors  00:16:02 - You NEED to weight lift  00:18:36 - Diet, nutrition, and lifestyle  00:27:10 - The importance of sunshine  00:29:11 - Dangers of high stress  00:32:59 - Red light therapy & sauna  Further Listening:  10 Reasons I Love My Sauna Metabolic Health Playlist  Strength Training Playlist  Courses:  Dr Tyna’s Strength Corner Red Light Options: LumeBox: Use code DRTYNA Biolight Shine: Use code DRTYNA  Sauna Options:  Sauna Blanket: Use code DRTYNA Pop-Up Sauna: Use code DRTYNA  SaunaSpace Tent: Use code DRTYNA Sunlighten: Tell them Dr Tyna sent you Sponsored By: Timeline Timeline is offering 10% off your order of Mitopure Go to timeline.com/drtyna. On this episode of the Dr. Tina show, I'm going to give you my brutally honest opinion on what I think you need to consider before you hire a functional medicine doctor.

0:14.7

I know my opinions are strong on this, as I am a functional medicine doctor, and I have been in this industry for 30 plus years.

0:22.1

And I have seen a lot come and go.

0:24.3

And now I have seen the advent of the internet and the influencer doctor,

0:28.5

which is not a title I like having put upon me whatsoever.

0:32.8

So I'm going to be completely honest with you and tell you what I think is going on, what I think

0:38.6

you need to do before you throw your money at any of these folks, and why the responsibility

0:43.2

is ultimately on you to get the work done. So let's jump in. All right, number one thing to consider,

0:48.8

most functional medicine doctors have started in the allopathic world, were completely brainwashed

0:55.5

in that world, and then saw the light, if you will. I always say welcome to the dark side

1:00.1

because we are always second class citizens over here in the community of understanding the basics

1:06.2

of common sense when it comes to the clinical application of medicine. I'm not dissing MDs. I'm not

1:11.1

dissing allopathic medicine. There is a time and a place for it, especially when we're talking

1:14.7

about emergency situations, especially when we're talking about situations where we need medications,

1:21.7

we need pharmaceuticals. I get it. I am actually licensed to prescribe pharmaceuticals, so I do use them.

1:26.9

And you've heard me say this before. I'm not a

1:28.4

purist. However, when it comes to chronic conditions, which are honestly where most Americans are sitting at this point,

1:34.5

I don't think allopathic medicine has a lot to offer them. And so that's where I say they get brainwashed by

1:40.4

that entire paradigm of a pill for every ill, run labs, diagnose, prescribed pharmaceutical

1:47.4

medication according to standard of care, patients on pharmaceutical medication for life,

1:52.3

goodbye. I realize that some doctors are savvy enough to actually try to talk to the patient
