Crane Neck Nugent’s career included work with the gang of Fred “Killer” Burke of St. Louis, whom he got to know when they served together as machine gunners in World War I. While no one was ever charged with the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, it is generally agreed that Al Capone hired the Burke gang, whom he called his “American Boys,” to take down his rival Bugs Moran. In this episode, we’ll also hear about Burke’s murder of a policeman in Michigan a few months after the massacre, his capture two years later when some of this information came to light.

0:16.0	Serious gang warfare in Chicago began with the slaying of Dean O'Banion in November 1924. In the 50 months since then,
0:26.2	38 murders have been recorded. Most of them attributed to the enmity between the Northside
0:32.0	band founded by O'Banion and the West Side Syndicate established by John Torio and turned over to Al Capone.
0:40.4	Yesterday's massacre marked the end of the Northside Dynasty, which began with O'Banian.
0:46.6	O'Banyan yielded to Jaime Weiss, who was replaced by Schemer Druchy, who was succeeded by Bugs Moran.
0:57.1	And Moran, last night, was missing,
1:05.2	with seven of his chief aides dead. Back to the assassination of Fycelor Jim Colossimo in 1920, when Prohibition was new and the profitable possibilities of Volstead Act violations were beginning to be realized,
1:13.4	police traced the series of slayings which reached a climax yesterday. But it was not until
1:19.4	O'Banion's murder that the lines were sharply drawn between the gangs. John Torio rose in Colossimo's
1:27.1	place. With him was Capone. With him also was O'Banion. And for a short
1:33.6	period, these three ruled the vast business of providing Chicago with beer and alcohol. But
1:40.5	O'Banian craved power. He said to hell with the Sicilians and broke away.
1:46.2	For four years, O'Banyan cleaned up on the north side and the money poured in.
1:51.2	There were murders during this period, but they were merely incidental among men who were insolent and cruel, prone to the use of drugs, nervous and jealous, and who invariably went armed.
2:02.8	Then O'Banion began hijacking. He stepped over into others' territory.
2:08.4	On November 10, 1924, three men walked into O'Banion's floral shop across from Holy Name Cathedral.
2:16.1	He stepped forward, his famous sunny smile and evidence,
2:19.8	his hand extended in greeting. Pistols cracked, and he sank dead among his flowers. It was a declaration
2:28.0	of war by the West Side gang against the North Siders. Two treaties have caused pauses and hostilities in the four-year
2:36.4	period since then. One was agreed on at a meeting in a downtown hotel. Another, a short time ago,
