Welcome back, everybody. Week 11 of American Borderlands.

Today we're talking about the history of the Border Patrol.

We're continuing on from our discussion on Tuesday about the creation of the INS, the Bracero program,

and so we'll see quite a bit of overlap. Today's lecture with Tuesdays as well as last weeks. We'll go over some questions to consider.

We'll talk about some of the immigration restriction laws that are passed in the early 20th century, as well as in the mid-century.

We'll also talk about the Border Patrol as an agency of immigration enforcement as a government agency.

I also want to talk about the 100 Mile Zone, which is something that a lot of us are probably

not familiar with, but we all should be familiar with the 100 mile zone.

And then finally, we'll talk about one of the biggest changes in Border Patrol over the past 40 and 50 years, which has been the growth of Latino, Latina Latinx border patrol agents.

Our guiding questions for today to think about what this history means is first of all how have 20th century laws shaped the nature of immigration

enforcement and the development of immigration agencies immigration

enforcement does not happen without immigration agencies so we want to talk about

both of those hand in hand second how has the support and the role of the

Border Patrol changed over the decades and finally how extensive is the authority of the Border Patrol changed over the decades. And finally, how extensive is the authority of the Border Patrol?

So the first thing that, the first immigration restriction law that we want to focus on here,

we've talked about some of the earlier exclusion acts, but this is immigration restriction rather than outright exclusion, although there are some exclusionary aspects of it
