About the speaker:

Professor Lewis works in the areas of the New Testament and Patristics. She teaches courses on the Synoptic Gospels, Johannine Writings, and Pauline Letters, as well as various patristic topics. Her interests include the history of biblical interpretation, women in the Bible and early Church, and early Christian biography. Professor Lewis received her doctorate from the University of Notre Dame, with a dissertation entitled “Early Jewish and Christian Interpretations of the Character of Isaac,” which focuses on the rabbinic and patristic exegesis of Genesis 22, the sacrifice of Isaac. She has also taught biblical studies and English at Notre Dame, St. Mary’s College, and Kent State University. Professor Lewis has published articles and book reviews on biblical interpretation and patristics for such publications as Communio, The Thomist, and The Word Among Us.

The past couple of months have been quite challenging, needless to say, with the physical,

economic, social, and other forms of suffering and hardships brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.

It seems that most of us have suffered to varying degrees.

For many people, the almost three-month-long disruption of our routines, church, jobs, work, school, family, and relationships

with others also remains unsettling with respect to the future, even with things opening up in many

places. At such a time, it's worthwhile to consider our present situation in light of other

periods of suffering in the church, and ultimately in relation to the suffering of Christ.

My talk this evening is entitled The Way of the Cross during pandemic,

suffering and discipleship in the Gospel of Mark.

In turning to the Gospel of Mark, we can see the ways in which the evangelists recounts the ministry, death,

and resurrection of Jesus with a particular emphasis

on suffering and discipleship and how they relate to each other, as well as to the suffering of Christ.

Perhaps this will help us to understand our situation in the context of Christian discipleship

as we follow Christ today on the way of the cross.

First, I'm going to offer some introductory comments on the New Testament Gospels,

and then I will briefly address the authorship of Mark's Gospel in order to provide some context for my discussion,

particularly in terms of the patristic tradition that typically

identifies the evangelist in relation to Peter. Then I will identify a helpful three-part

structure of Mark's Gospel to guide us through our discussion of the theme of suffering

and how it relates to discipleship in Christology. Finally, I will summarize some literary features of Mark's gospel

to draw our attention to the ways in which Mark tells us the gospel,
