Summary

In recent years, there’s been a dramatic increase in the number of anti-LGBTQ bills introduced in state legislatures across the country. The ACLU is currently tracking 474 such bills, the majority of which target transgender rights. Meanwhile, trans people are over four times more likely than cisgender people to be the victims of violent crime. And according to a 2022 report from the Trevor Project, 45 percent of LGBTQ youth seriously considered suicide in the past year, including more than half of transgender and nonbinary youth. In this live taping of The Weeds, host Jonquilyn Hill sits down with Danni Askini, co-executive director of national programs for the Gender Justice League. The two examine the history of gender-affirming care, discuss how changes in health policy and advancements in marriage equality have led to this backlash, and explore how advocates are responding. I had my very first live taping of The Weeds at the Crosscut Ideas Festival in Seattle.

Hello everyone and welcome to The Weeds Live from the Crosscut Ideas Festival.

0:53.0

All right, I think you guys can do a little better than that. Let's make some noise in here.

Yeah! That's the energy that I love. My name is John Colin Hill and I host The Weeds,

1:07.8

Vox's Policy and Politics Podcast. And this is my first ever live show in the host seat. So,

1:15.8

thank you all so much for coming and doing this with us today. One of the things that I love about

1:21.4

policy is that yes, we go down these rabbit holes and we get wonky and we get nerdy. But at the end

1:29.3

of the day, policy really is personal. It's the reason that our schools are funded and it's the

1:37.0

reason that our roads are paved. And as we'll get to later, it determines the kinds of healthcare we

1:43.8

can access. Today, we're going to talk about the recent wave of anti-trans legislation we've seen

1:49.7

in states all across the country. At the time of this recording, the ACLU is tracking 474 bills

1:57.8

and the majority of them target transgender rights. Everything from sports teams and bathrooms

2:03.4

to restricting access to gender affirming care for youth. While a lot of these proposals are very

2:09.1

unlikely to become law, they serve as a cultural lightning rod and they energize the base of the

2:14.5

politicians who introduce them. But they also stand to do real harm to a marginalized community.

2:21.7

My guess today is Danny Eskini. Danny is the founder of the Gender Justice League Seattle and

used to be policy director of Basic Rights Oregon and has done extensive policy work with state
