originated in late 19th century England

with a desperate artist. In 1895, Florence Upton illustrated her children's book, The Adventures of

Two Dutch Dolls. She needed money to attend art school and based her gollywog character on a doll she played

with as a child.

Her book sold and the money rolled in.

But Upton never trademarked the gollywog, so it entered the public domain and became a staple

in British culture.

Goliwogs weren't just toys. They showed up on clocks, jars, jewelry, greeting cards, candy, clothing, ads, you name it.

The image was everywhere.
