This week, an interview I have been waiting for years to do with a guy who has a shop

half a mile away from me that I can see from the kitchen window from the office.

Our guest is Steve Myers.

He's the owner of Skunk River Restorations, a shop here in Ames, Iowa.

If you have ever, ever, ever wanted to restore cars

for a living or race cars seriously as your hobby, if you just want to geek out on someone who

loves restoring cars, you will listen to this episode probably twice. Steve's shop is the best

kept secret. That's really no secret. They restore cars. His first love is definitely European

cars. They have made food trucks out of old grummans, I think. Steve races very competitively,

I think almost soon internationally. I think he has an FIA license. They restored the Carmen

Gia, my dad and I have. And they do it all from this unmarked building with a tiny little

sign on the front door. He will be the first to say that restorations are his first love, but

are tough because you can never really bill for each and every hour you put in, and the connections

and reputation that he had 20 years prior to opening the shop are what made it fly when it came

to launch. It's going gangbusters today, but when he started, it started just like it does for the rest of us.

Two guys that I hired to work for me, they were not in a position to become partners, even though

it is something that we talked about, and I would have liked because it was scary trying to do this at first.

I had never done anything like this.
