I missed Christmases and birthdays, and instead I was in the crack house somewhere.

I buried my grandmother, and I buried my emotions. I never grieved.

You know, I'm distancing myself from my family. They had no idea I was even using heroin until the first time I overdosed.

It was not that very long ago that I'd been living on the street,

This one, I really feel like I earned.

Addiction, illness, physical impairment. They can hit all of us and the people we love.

But that's why recovery stories are so powerful. People who face amazing struggles. I put both

my arms up and yelled to the car to stop. And the lady smiled as big as she could and stepped on the gas and came right at me.
