Summary

In this month's subscriber-only episode, we examine some recently discovered diaries from Unity Valkyrie Mitford, odious sister of the odious Tom. How precisely was her brother supposed to be a devoted Nazi but "not an anti-semite?" Only British journalists can tell. Then, we discuss Trump's executive orders in the context of lavender scares past and present before diving into a slutty advice segment about a woman dating two gay guys. She's confused! So are we! Subscribe on Patreon or Apple Podcasts for the full story.

Well, this week also had some news on the front of a recent episode.

0:05.0

One of the worst newspapers, maybe in the Western world, wrote a big headline article about some newly discovered diaries from that extremely fascistly named and, you know, she lived up to her name, British socialite, Miss Unity Valkyry Mitford.

0:21.6

I still am aghast that that was her actual name.

0:25.6

I'm almost aghast at the fact that that was her actual name as I am at the cover of Right Said Fred by her sister, Jessica, and Dr. Maya Angelou.

0:34.6

But Unity apparently had written some diaries during the time that she was

0:39.9

cruising Munich, desperately trying to pick up Hitler. And what did they turn out to say, Hugh?

0:45.8

Right. Yeah. Unsurprising that there were these secret diaries, because as we discussed a lot in

0:49.9

the podcast, there were a family who were devoted to the written words and to this sort of writing,

0:56.5

letters to each other and diaries of their own and memoirs and autobiographies and things like

1:01.0

this. So unsurprising that they exist or that they existed, perhaps surprising they've come out

1:06.7

now. And we are, of course, assuming that they are accurate, that they're not forgeries

1:12.9

or hoaxes, which does actually tie into a very interesting moment in British history in the past

1:17.8

when the Sunday Times, I think in the 1970s, I want to say, maybe 1980s, published this very famous

1:24.3

hoax of the Hickel the Hitler Diaries, which were hoax forgeries of Hitler's

1:29.0

supposed to diaries that supposedly been found in West Berlin and were published with the support

1:35.1

of a very prominent British historian. He put his name to them and later admitted that he was

1:39.5

probably, he'd probably been fooled. So we're assuming that they're accurate, but they could well be.

1:45.5

The sort of the style seems to be right. They'd been looked over by other experts. Yeah,

1:49.4

they could well be right. What's interesting and probably stands in their favour as not being

1:53.5

forgeries is that actually they don't reveal a huge amount that we didn't already know,

1:58.6

at least as rumour. So the official story, I guess the official family story was that Unity died as a virgin.

2:05.3

It seems extremely evident from the diaries that she said not.
