Summary

Provisional figures from 2022 show a rise in transport emissions compared to the year previous. And while the transport system is already the largest emitting sector across the UK economy, this is a major obstacle for policymakers in their bid to reach net zero by 2050. In the last year, transport entered the political arena in a way not seen before. There were contradictory announcements on the sales of petrol and diesel cars and vans, conspiracy theories, strikes, budget cuts, headline announcements, world first flights and much more. In this episode, head of climate policy Helena Bennett sits down with members of the Green Alliance transport team to discuss an up and down year for transport policy.

Alliance. Provisional figures for the transport sector have seen emissions rise from 2021 to 2022,

0:17.2

and they made up around a third of all emissions in the UK. A lot of this is in part a hangover

0:23.2

from the lifting of pandemic restrictions, but it's still a worrying sign for policymakers

0:27.6

that an awful lot of work needs to be done in the transport system to make sure we're on

track for net zero by 2050. When you include emissions from international aviation and shipping as well,

the challenge becomes even greater.

At Green Alliance, we've worked across many sub-sectors of transport, including the rolling out of

crucial new technologies like electric vehicles, to reducing demand for polluting forms of transport,

and encouraging modal shift from one form to another.

But today, we thought we'd do something slightly different with this podcast and round up

0:56.4

some of the major developments in the world of transport policy from the last 12 months.

To do so, I'm joined by some members of our fantastic Green Alliance team, Alice Watson, Johann

Beckford and Rosie Allen, who can all give us a bit of an overview from what's been an up

1:10.0

and down year for transport decarbonisation.

1:15.3

To begin, I'm going to hand over to Alice. This year really saw the politicisation of transport

1:20.3

policy. It's been a tough year for government on net zero, and we've seen them seek to use

1:25.1

transport as a dividing line to shore up their support and ask

1:28.2

difficult questions of the Labour Party. Alice, over to you. So we've really seen transport

1:33.5

and headlines a lot this year compared to the usual. It's been another year of strikes being the

norm, affecting journeys across the country and really impacting the public's perception of
