Summary

What if the very thing you thought gave you freedom was actually keeping you stuck? As the youngest of three children, Lisa watched her older brothers drink and felt both curious and uneasy about it. In college, drinking felt like freedom. During her international sports career, it was a way to relax, fit in, and manage stress. Over time, what once gave her a sense of independence left her burnt out and disconnected from herself. As anxiety crept in, she began questioning her habits. After reading This Naked Mind, she realized she had the power to change her relationship with alcohol. In this episode, Lisa joins Annie to share how she rediscovered herself, rebuilt trust in her choices, and redefined what freedom really means. In this episode, Annie and Lisa will discuss: - Growing up with mixed feelings about alcohol - Viewing alcohol as a symbol of independence - Navigating the drinking culture in international sports - Experiencing a blackout and waking up injured - Dealing with anxiety and questioning her habits - How This Naked Mind shifted her mindset - The link between alcohol and identity - How psychedelic therapy supported her healing - Reconnecting with her true self and emotions - Finding support and guidance through The PATH - Overcoming the fear of making life changes - Helping others rebuild self-trust through coaching - Using curiosity to make lasting changes - And other topics… Related Episodes: EP 480: Reader Question – What is the Correlation Between Alcohol and Anxiety? https://thisnakedmind.com/ep-480-reader-question-what-is-the-correlation-between-alcohol-and-anxiety  EP 604: Reader Question – Embracing Your Authentic Self: Overcoming Self-Judgment and Insecurities https://thisnakedmind.com/ep-604-reader-question-embracing-your-authentic-self-overcoming-self-judgment-and-insecurities/  EP 719: Naked Life Story – Katie W. https://thisnakedmind.com/ep-719-naked-life-story-katie-w/  Ready to take the next step on your journey?  Visit https://learn.thisnakedmind.com/podcast-resources for free resources, programs, and more. Great. So good to have you. So why don't you take us back to the beginning in your journey

0:28.1

with alcohol? Where did it all start for you? I love this question. And of course, having listened to

0:32.8

the podcast for a really long time, it's so interesting to hear how different our formative memories are

0:39.5

around alcohol. And I almost, on reflection, felt really uninspired by my initial story because I think

0:49.0

what I've recognized about, especially the early years of my relationship with alcohol is how obvious it felt or how

0:57.4

integrated it felt into society in the sense of I never questioned it. It wasn't something that I was

1:03.6

deeply aware of. I didn't have any language to consider that there were alternatives to people's relationship with alcohol. I assumed it was

1:13.7

part of everyday life for everybody and didn't consider until much later in my life that people

1:19.9

actually chose different roots. And so on reflection of my own story, I think my earliest memories

1:26.2

really had to do with me being the youngest

1:28.2

of three children. I have two older brothers and we're all two years apart. So when I was growing up,

1:34.5

I was probably around maybe 10 years old when I first started to recognize the role of alcohol

1:43.3

in my household. And that really had to do with

1:45.3

my older brothers experimenting in their own social lives with alcohol. And so, you know, single parent

1:51.4

household. My mom was working 10,000 jobs and going to school and trying to manage three rambunctious

1:57.9

kids. And so there were periods of time where, you know, not left alone at

2:03.6

home, but there'd be these times where I'd be alone at home and my brothers would be in and out

2:10.3

or my mom would be chasing my brothers down the street because they were up to boy, no good.

2:16.0

And so I think my really first memories of alcohol specifically
