This is an unforgettable story for so many of the wrong reasons.

A friend of mine was murdered, and I nearly drove off the road when I heard about it.

I went to Phoenix to attend his funeral, but I ended up telling the story of not just his

death, but the deaths of others, and then reporting on how laws which should protect us often

do not, with brutal consequences.

It was all part and parcel of the same story.

Now, here's the weird thing, as horribly as this starts.

Police worked around the clock desperate for leads.

A long weekend of terror that would lead to a hard question did any of it have to happen,

because this was a tragedy many people saw coming, including the first and most high-profile

victim.
