The trial of Eleanor Williams was drawing to a close, and the judge was keen to wrap things up.

But Christmas was coming.

Turkey lunches, gifts under the tree, and the New Year's fireworks would delay the jury's deliberations. When they did return in January, it took just over three hours to reach a guilty verdict. The jury found Eleanor Williams had perverted the course of justice by accusing innocent men of abusing her.

The lies had sparked hysteria about an alleged grooming gang. She had faked evidence to back up

her claims. But in those days just before Christmas, a young woman had appeared at the courthouse

in Preston to give evidence on behalf of the defence.

The small blonde woman in her early 20s, her face hidden under a hood, spent most of the day either in the canteen or outside in the rain vaping.

As journalists covering the case, we couldn't speak to her ahead of her taking the stand,

and in the end, after legal argument not in the presence of the jury, the young woman went home
