Summary

EPISODE 7: A new court case finally exposes abuse in Barrow. Jason and Liz have known about these allegations for years but they can only reveal the facts now. The case involves three brothers and it's taken their victims more than a decade to get justice. Now we can tell the story of their crimes and follow a thread leading back to Ellie Williams. She's out of jail and not allowed to talk to the media. But Jason and Liz find her old diaries raise fresh questions.

It's another cold, dark, rainy day outside Preston Crown Court, where I've spent many days making this podcast.

Back in 2023, Eleanor Williams was convicted here of faking evidence that she had been raped by several men.

Her hometown of Barrow became notorious for the fake grooming gang,

a town where people turned violent against Asian men over false allegations.

This story began with Eleanor Williams, a teenager who would go missing and reappear with horrific injuries,

eventually posting on Facebook her explanation that she was being trafficked and raped by gang evasion men.

But she was arrested and prosecuted for lying, for faking messages and even harming herself in an effort to frame innocent men.

Over the course of six previous episodes, we've investigated other men.

She also accused, but she was never charged with lying about them.
