In June of 2016, a white Tesla was parked along the side of Mulholland Highway, a two-lane road that

winds through the hills of Calabassis. Inside the Tesla set Chris Bathum and Erica Lottel. Erica was 27 years old, a former

client of CRLA. Chris pulled out a meth pipe and put a flame underneath it until it started smoking.

Suddenly a sheriff's deputy pulled up behind the Tesla.

Chris dropped the pipe to the floorboard.

Danny, a former CRLA client who we spoke with earlier in the season, was friends with Erica.

He told me about this incident.

Erica called me and she told me when that happened and she goes, hey, he tried to tell me to take all the drugs and say they were mine and I said no.

And then he tried to tell me that if I didn't take him, then this would be bad.

Like I had to take him and if I didn't, this would be bad for me and I still said no.

And then when the cops walked

up to the car and asked him what was going on he said oh this is a girl that was in my

treatment center to just relapse I'm taking her back to to detox and these are

her drugs you know and she was like nope they're not.

Erica later testified that Chris claimed all the drugs in the car

belonged to Erica, which wasn't true.

He also said she was suicidal and he was just trying to help her.

But Chris was clearly high, he'd been snorting meth off his finger while he was driving.

The deputy then talked to Erica to get her side of the story.

She said she was not suicidal but that she and Chris had gone there with the intent to get
