Summary

I sat down with Sal Carollo this week, and we spoke about the grief he felt from losing not only his mother to cancer, but his cousin Francesco as well, all in the matter of a year. He talks about some of his coping mechanisms, his experience being a caretaker, ways that he likes to honor his mother, and some of his favorite last memories with her. Everyone experiences grief differently, but the one thing that I know we all share in common is that the grief hurts, and it is okay to NOT be okay.

How would you describe Rosalie? A pain in the ass now. She was, she loved hard. If she liked you, she loved you. If she didn't, she didn't. I love that.

1:13.4

She was very Italian in that way. But if you were in her corner, she had you for life. She also had a lot of people in her corner. She was a popular woman.

1:23.0

I know. She knew how to accumulate and curate friends. She didn't have time for the bullshit. There's a lot of people bring bullshit into your life.

1:34.8

She knew how to keep that away and to keep those good people in. What do you think? Everybody loved the most about her.

1:43.4

That's interesting. I think she just had a presence about her. She walked into a room and knew she walked into a room. She had a way of being inclusive. She never made anyone feel like an outsider. She didn't care if she knew you for 20 years or for two minutes.

If you were in her house and her home, she wanted you to feel comfortable. I think that's what people remember most about her.

2:07.0

What was your relationship with her growing up? Are you guys really close?

2:12.6

Her and I were very similar in a lot of ways. I think that's why we used to argue a lot. We're both opinionated.

2:19.6

I love it. But we were very close. She did a laugh for us. She took the role of mom and wife very seriously.

2:29.0

I think that those were her two favorite roles. Maybe a little too much for the mother. She was self-proclaimed telecopter mom.

2:38.2

Was she very involved in your life? Almost like two and a half. What are you doing? Where are you at? Almost like two and a half.

2:43.4

It's like, ma, please. I don't know if you're going to have time for a story. I don't know. Please. We got nothing but time.

2:49.2

She was a self-proclaimed telecopter mom. There was one time I was like, I think it was a freshman or maybe middle school.

2:54.8

I was staying after school for something my phone died. I didn't think it was that big of a deal. She knew where I was.
