I was nominated by the Air Force and selected by NASA as an

astronaut pilot and space shuttle commander. After retiring from the Air Force and

NASA I joined Sandia National Laboratories, where I served as a Center Director responsible for programs,

including satellites, space payloads, sensors, vulnerability assessments, and analysis tools,

international programs including support to the nuclear fuel cycle,

and efforts to reduce the threat of terrorism

and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction with responsibility for all the

intelligence work performed by Sandia Labs. In that capacity I led a team of

several hundred brilliant innovative and highly motivated

scientists and engineers who work to protect the nation from threats to our

nuclear weapons and limit the proliferation of the knowledge required to build

them. Because of the knowledge required to build them.

Because of the catastrophic consequences of the failure to protect these weapons and this knowledge from people and governments with ill intentions,

the resources devoted to this effort were significant and sustained.
