0:03.3	You have a pretty mind-blowing and slightly sinister theory on the origins of Lyme disease,
0:09.2	one of the fastest growing infectious diseases today in North America.
0:12.6	And that theory is that Lyme isn't some natural disease that naturally evolved, rather that Lyme disease was essentially born from a Cold War
0:24.6	biological weapons program.
0:26.6	In other words, bioweapon facility that accidentally escaped into the public.
0:32.5	Number one, did I get that right?
0:34.5	And number two, why should our audience care about this conversation today?
0:39.3	A bunch of people got sick beginning in the late 60s around Lyme, Connecticut, which is just off Long Island near New York City.
0:48.9	And they got sick with a really strange set of symptoms.
0:53.2	They were both neurological and crazy joint pains,
0:56.3	giant swollen knees like balloons. Back then, sometimes they would name a disease after
1:01.7	where it was first discovered. So the Yale rheumatologist called it Lyme disease. My theory is
1:08.2	it was multiple organisms that got out of a military lab somehow. One of them might be
1:15.1	the Lyme bacterium, Borrelia burgdorferide. The other one, according to the discover of Lyme disease,
1:20.5	he told me at the end of his life. He believed that that was a weaponized germ that came out of his
1:25.8	Cold War lab and there was an experiment gone wrong. So it's
1:29.9	complicated in that what we call Lyme disease is this pyrichetyl bacteria, but I think there's no
1:36.7	proof that that was weaponized, but there is this other organism, which might be related to Rocky
1:41.6	Man in Spotted Fever, which Willy Bergdorfer, the discoverer, called Swiss agent.
1:46.2	So that's complicated, but it helps to know that in the Cold War, the military weaponized ticks,
