Summary

The famous parable of the prodigal son shows us not just how the grace of God changes our individual lives but also how it changes our relationships with each other, how it forms a new kind of human community, a unique human society. Jesus brilliantly ties this story in with one of the main themes of the entire Bible: exile and homecoming. Philosophers have taught that the human condition is one of profound alienation—feeling that we’re not really home in this world. Why would that be? What are we going to do about that? Those profound questions are all addressed and actually answered by this parable. We’re going to learn here about the human condition, the divine solution for it, and the new Communion that is the result. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on November 2, 2008. Series: The Fellowship of Grace. Scripture: Luke 15:17-32. 0:37.0	This morning's Gospel reading is from Luke 15 verses 17 through 32. When he came to
0:48.3	his senses, he said, how many of my fathers hired men have food to spare, and here I am
0:56.0	starving to death. I will set out and go back to my father and say to him, father, I have
1:02.8	sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make
1:10.1	me like one of your hired men. So he got up and went back to his father. But while he
1:17.5	was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him.
1:25.2	He ran to his son through his arms around him and kissed him. The son said to him, father,
1:31.6	I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.
1:37.9	But the father said to his servants, quick, bring the best robe and put it on him, put a ring
1:43.9	on his finger and sandals on his feet, bring the fat and calf and kill it. Let's have
1:49.4	a feast and celebrate for this son of mine was dead and his alive again. He was lost
1:55.7	and is found. So they began to celebrate. Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When
