I'm Tom Billu and this is Impact Theory. This is part two of my eye-opening conversation with David Pac-Man.

0:06.4

And if you're just tuning in, welcome because here in part two, we are going to the next level.

0:13.2

David and I try to see if we can come eye to eye on what exactly is deranging politics right now between the left and the right.

0:21.3

Spoiler alert, we do not get on the same page, but I think that this discussion is going to

0:25.6

help a lot of people come to their own conclusions about what is really going on in a world

0:31.4

where we cannot agree on some of the basic facts. Let's jump right back in.

0:35.9

In the book, you make a, there's a chapter called

0:39.0

Why Choose the Left? And I would say you're making a moral case for choosing the left.

0:45.9

What do you see, if you agree with that assessment, what do you see as a moral case for the

0:51.0

left? I don't agree with that. I think really I'm making an empirical

0:54.6

and economic case, really. And it's a lot of the stuff we've already talked about, much of which

0:59.6

we disagree with. I mean, I think the proof here is the tension you describe as important,

1:07.0

I agree is important. And I advocate not for the rubber band coming off and flying all the way to the left. I advocate for something that is modestly to the left to use that shorthand of where we are right now. And in the book, I point to examples around the world, some of which we've talked about, it's,

1:33.0

it's really primarily, you know, the problem with making the moral case, which I think,

1:37.6

you know, you could make, I guess, but the problem with the moral case is morality can differ a lot more than I think economic metrics can differ. And so my effort in the book, and maybe I failed to do it if it came

1:45.4

off as only a moral case, is that when we look at the five or six examples I cite, that there's

1:50.8

a really good empirical and economic case for what I'm advocating for. It doesn't crush innovation.

1:56.6

It doesn't stifle liberty or freedom. And I try to defend that in the book. I may fail to do it,

2:02.1

but that's that's the goal for me. The reason that people have such a hard time convincing people

2:07.3

is you're going up against somebody's frame of reference. That frame of reference is going to be

2:11.9

built around their biology, their beliefs, and their values. And it also has to describe the world as they see it. And so if you're

2:19.4

giving them a piece that they look at and they're like, that doesn't match what I believe to be
