Welcome to the Green Alliance podcast. We're the charity and think tank that's all about achieving ambitious leadership for the environment. I'm Johann Beckford, policy advisor at Green Alliance. The UK was the first major economy in the world to commit to a legally binding target to bring all greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050.

However, transport is a devolved matter and the approach to delivering a net zero transport network

has varied across parts of the UK.

It has long been recognised that road infrastructure investment encourages people to drive,

exacerbating congestion and air pollution, resulting in higher carbon

emissions. The UK government is putting in place an ambitious policy package to support the switch

to electric vehicles, including a zero emissions vehicle mandate to ensure more people can benefit

from cleaner cars sooner. But this must go hand in hand with measures to manage total traffic levels as well.

As time has gone on, I'm less and less interested really in fiddling around with the formulas.

I think we've got to hit this right in his heart and say this is not what we need to keep on doing.

This has failed us. It is not going to be done at zero targets and we need a shift.

And hopefully the work done by this very eminent

panel will provide not just practical results in Wales, but an evidence base and an approach

which can help inform the debate elsewhere. While government is reviewing planning for major

road investment, it has not paused its existing road building plans. But the Welsh government has

explicitly recognised the need to reduce car miles and has

started a process to review all major existing road building plans to ensure overall investment

aligns with its commitment to net zero.

At a recent event, organised jointly by Green Alliance, Campaign for Better Transport and Transport
