Behind the Knife, The Surgery Podcast, where we take a behind the scenes intimate look at surgery

from leaders in the Knife. As many of you are aware, there are multiple technical issues with the administration of the general surgery qualifying exam this year, frequently called the QE, which is a written multiple choice exam taken at the conclusion of general

surgery training. Once this is passed you then take your certifying exam

also known as the CE which is an oral board examination. Once you pass both of these, then you are

considered board certified by the American Board of Surgery. Many trainees spend

months studying for the qualifying exam and plan their summers before starting

their fellowship or first jobs around this exam.

So the disruption and eventual cancellation of this exam is quite problematic as we will discuss in the

podcast. Our goal at Behind the Knife is to facilitate a productive discussion to help trainees nationwide

understand the rationale for decisions that are being made at the American Board of Surgery

and to make the voices and concerns of trainees heard at the highest levels of the American Board of Surgery.

Many of the specifics as to how and when board exams will be restarted is still not known,

and that is why we do not ask these questions in the podcast.
