Summary

This week, we’re talking sales - or rather, we’re talking what happens if we take sales out of the equation. Alice has just finished a gallery show while Louise has a pile of finished paintings she hasn’t yet put on her website.

We discuss the role that sales play in our creative process and in our ultimate satisfaction. Is it important to exchange money for paintings? How would it feel to give work away? Or to make work with no intention of ever sharing it? And what impact would these decisions have on our creativity?

Hi and welcome to episode 254 of Art Juice, this is honest, generous and humorous

0:05.4

conversations to feed your creative soul and get you thinking with me, Louise Fletcher and

0:11.0

me Alice Sheridan. And today we're going to talk about selling art but from a slightly different perspective.

0:19.0

We're just going to talk about I don't know why we sell it, what would happen if we didn't sell it, what would change.

0:25.9

So we'll get to that shortly, but first of all, on that note, I know you've been busy, Ellis.

0:31.7

What have you been up to? Well we have just finished I'm quite glad we weren't making this yesterday

0:36.9

because I was quite sort of talked out yesterday. We have just finished six days of an exhibition in London's Portobello Road with two other artists.

0:50.0

Maybe at some point we'll do a complete sort of breakdown of it with them. I think it would be cool.

0:56.5

Yeah, I think it's important that you know I don't speak for them. I can speak for my experiences of it, but it was very interesting.

1:06.7

I mean it was a gallery that would be termed a vanity gallery.

1:09.8

There are spaces there, you pay the gallery, you do your stuff.

1:14.4

There's no sort of selection process,

1:17.2

as far as we can tell, although we did have to submit our work

1:20.1

and our websites and things like that.

1:22.4

So it was a pure exercise and there were some really lovely things about it.

1:28.8

It felt very different from doing an art fair. We had some fabulous feedback and comments that we all had

1:35.1

sales and equally there were some things that maybe would make you think about

1:40.8

whether it would be worth doing again. So I think it probably is a subject

1:45.0

that's worth returning to. I'm happy with my outcome from it, sales-wise, and also I'm happy because it's given me what I often talk about when you get your work

1:58.9

together for any event where you show it which is that time to spend with your work in a different context outside of your studio.

2:06.0

And for me, usually that has been at an art fair, where it is quite a busy,y it's like a concise patch of time usually two days in an evening or something like that

2:19.6

and there is a lot of people passing by energy as well as the people that stop.
