The ocean is full of amazing creatures including the animals known as cephalopods, which includes

squids, octopuses, and cuddlefish. They all have a big head, a set of arms or tentacles,

and they can squirt ink. They can even camouflage themselves like a

chameleon and they're known to be very intelligent. We all know what cephalopods

look like more or less, but would you know which is which?

Hi, I'm Dexter and I'm from County Galway, Ireland and my question is, what's the difference

between a squid and an octopus?

That's a great question.

The difference between a squid and an octopus

can pretty much all boil down to looking at their limbs.

My name is Dr. Sarah Mackinolti.

I am a squid biologist.

I'm the executive director of Skype a scientist,

and I'm also an assistant research professor at the University of Connecticut.

So an octopus has eight arms and a squid has eight arms plus an additional two tentacles and if you're thinking to yourself

wait a second I thought that octopuses had tentacles too we do sometimes call those

tentacles too but the difference between a tentacle and an arm all comes down to how they're built.

So tentacles are super duper stretchy.

They're kind of like rubber bands and they don't have any suction cups along the limb.
