Summary

Nearly 50 people have died in India following violence around a controversial citizenship law which critics say is anti-Muslim. Photographs, videos and accounts on social media paint a chilling image of what appears to be mostly Hindu mobs beating unarmed Muslim men. In this episode we speak to BBC journalists Yogita Limaye and Sachin Gogoi to find out what’s fuelling the violence. Today, why are they rioting in Delhi? While we've all been trying to track down hand sanitizer in India there's been another big story.

People have died, people have been injured, thousands have been displaced. It's partly to do with a new citizenship law that the government brought in, a different way of deciding who

can become a citizen of India. Critics say it's anti-Muslim, so you've had these protests and now the violence has spread to the

capital Delhi and it's taking on a religious flavor with Hindu and Muslim

groups fighting each other.

We've got a couple of people today in Delhi to talk us through what's going on and why.

The first is Yugita Lemai, who's one of our

correspondence in India.

The video itself is extremely graphic. This man sort of lying on the ground,

surrounded by a group of policemen. He's alone and he's being beaten with sticks repeatedly.

He kind of stands up and then, you know, take it across the street, beaten again.

And then you see him in another video where he's lying with four other men he appears to be

unconscious in that video and the other men are sort of being poked with sticks and

they're being asked to sing India's national anthem to prove their patriotism.

You know, just to understand the context of that, it's what's been happening in India,

especially over the last six

months where these religious divisions have been getting a lot deeper I would say

also particularly since the citizenship law was passed in December I think Indian society has been the most polarize that I've ever seen it in my lifetime for sure.
