Summary

Sermon on the Mount E31 – Is it possible to evaluate the behavior of others in a healthy way? Jesus offers two parables that illustrate the wisdom needed to evaluate someone else's behavior. The first parable invites us to examine ourselves before others, and the second parable reminds us the necessary discernment for this happens only in a community of faith. In this episode, Tim and Jon discuss Jesus’ teachings on how and when to speak into the lives of others.

0:13.0	Hi John, so we're in the part of the sermon on the Mount where Jesus is giving
0:16.4	guidance and wisdom about how to do right by God and others when we're in
0:20.6	difficult relational situations.
0:23.0	Last week, Tim and I looked at the first teaching,
0:26.0	where Jesus says, don't judge.
0:29.0	Now that word to judge can mean generally evaluating someone's behavior.
0:34.0	But there's another nuance to the word judge that goes deeper than mere evaluation.
0:39.0	It's taking the next step to condemn a person for their behavior.
0:43.0	Yeah, so don't judge.
0:45.2	Don't make a final decision about someone's motives.
0:48.4	And don't make a declaration of someone's ultimate standing before God.
0:52.8	Instead, Jesus is asking us to take a posture of generosity
0:56.8	and to give others the benefit of the doubt
0:58.9	that we all know how to give ourselves.
