In 1996, at the American Baseball Association convention in Nashville, a 78-year-old coach named John took the stage to address over 4,000 baseball coaches.

He was introduced as a legendary coach, having won numerous championships over 40,000 baseball coaches. He was introduced as a legendary coach, having won numerous

championships over 44 years of coaching college baseball. But it was not what he carried around

in his hand, but what he carried around his neck that caught everyone's attention.

Around his neck, he carried a full-size home plate,

strung from a chain around his neck.

At first, many in the audience chuckled.

They laughed, wondering what it all meant.

But as he began to speak, the laughter quickly faded.

He started by asking everyone in the audience, a simple question, how wide is home plate in

Little League?

After a few murmurs, the response came back, 17 inches.
