Summary

Fewer expensive car chases, more moody shots and ambiguous endings: movies made in Europe are often very different from those made in the US. But Europe's more arty film output isn't just a product of our culture — it has a lot to do with how the industry is financed. This week, we're asking: why is European cinema the way it is, and should we be trying to change it? Plus, producer Wojciech Oleksiak joins Katy to discuss Europe's latest far-right alliance and why Kaja Kallas may be glad to be stepping down as Estonia's prime minister.    This episode was supported by KIDS Regio. Thanks so much to project manager Anne Schultka for joining us, along with Tamara Kolarić, assistant professor in social sciences at SALIS, Dublin City University. Thanks for listening! 0:34.7

Hello.

0:35.4

How you doing?

0:36.2

I'm fine, I'm fine.

0:37.4

It's been good. Just one thing that really

0:39.6

bothers everybody and let me just be the most British person in the room for a second is that the

0:45.1

weather in Poland has been absolutely tropical in the past weeks. Yeah, you've had like 40 degrees in Warsaw,

0:51.5

right? Which is not, sorry to bring stereotypes into it. It's not what people

0:54.9

think of Warsaw. No, I don't think. And then, you know, we go from extreme heat to monson rains

1:00.7

and vague and like, you know, I'm okay with it. Although one of these rains completely ruined

1:06.6

my son's birthday garden party. But yeah, but we moved it inside and it was even more hectic and they loved it.

1:14.2

But then, you know, I've got this grandma who's 95 years old and she's really struggling to

1:18.7

bear with it.

1:19.4

Like, you know, she never had to endure anything like that.

1:21.5

Oh, poor thing.

1:22.6

So, yeah.

1:23.7

But anyway, I guess the political climate is even hotter in Paris.

1:28.1

Oh, nice segue.

1:29.9

How are you coping?

1:31.1
