Summary

Do you ever dream of having a guitar only to realize it's five—maybe 10!—times outside your budget? It's probably because of one of these seven factors that determine a guitar's price. In this episode, we'll explore why some guitars are more expensive than others. After decades of experience playing, buying, and selling, I've picked up on seven main factors that determine price.  Some of the factors are fairly fixed. Some of them are tied to market conditions. But all of them come together to determine the price of a guitar. I'm not saying this is a definitive list. Instead, it's a great starting place for anyone who is wondering why a guitar is as expensive or cheap as it is. I see so many guitarists dismiss a guitar based on its price. Instead of balking at a number or judging it on its value, ask yourself why. Why does it cost that much? Is it because of branding? Materials? Endorsements? Manufactured scarcity? The list goes on. in time a little bit and look at some comments from the My Favorite Martin Guitars episode,

one of which I'm not even sure I'm going to feature.

It's from a guitar snob, and usually I don't shed any light on negative comments, but I might

1:00.2

have to for this one.

1:02.1

We'll see if I have time.

1:03.6

That's all coming up in a little bit, but first, let's look at some of the cost factors,

1:07.6

the factors that go into pricing acoustic guitars. And we're going to decide,

1:12.9

as a group, if expensive guitars are worth it. Now, I wish it was that easy. I wish there was

1:20.1

just a single thing that separated expensive guitars from cheap guitars. But there's not. There's actually quite a few factors when it comes to the price of an acoustic guitar.

1:32.8

And what I want to do is just have a discussion right here, right now, on the Acoustic Tuesday show, about some of the things that impact the price of acoustic guitars.

1:42.3

Because chances are, as an acoustic guitar geek, you've shopped

1:46.6

for acoustic guitars before. And you've seen guitars as little as a hundred bucks. And you've

1:52.4

seen guitars as much as maybe $100,000 or more. So we're talking a wide spectrum of price. So what gives? Is there a sweet spot?

2:03.6

Well, again, I wish it was that simple. Let's first look at some of the factors that drive the cost of acoustic guitars,

2:10.6

and then we'll kind of look at, well, the moral of the story and what you should be looking for,

again, as a buyer looking to get a good
