This Sunday, a few days from now, there will be an anticipated federal election in Germany.

Now, German elections tend to be relatively boring and placid affairs, in which the same

cast of parties play musical chairs with one or two sitting out, as my podcast guest this week says,

and the others taking the rightful place in the government. But the elections this week

are going to be rather more consequential for two reasons. The first is that Germany is now

in a deep crisis of its basic model.

Its economy is doing more poorly than it has at any point in the last decades.

There's a genuine threat that much of the German car industry could go bust in the coming years.

Its foreign policy is deeply disoriented both by its long-time trade partnership with China

and by its reliance for security and other things on the United States.
