and I'm broadcasting from Providence, Rhode Island. We are called upon to love our jobs at a time

when work has for so many become less lovable than ever. As Sarah Jaffee explains, this is no accident.

The idea that you should do what you love and you'll never work another day in your life

is a dominant fantasy that keeps today's neoliberal capitalist order afloat.

It keeps you thinking that the solution to your low wage service job

is to keep looking for that dream job or to focus on that five to nine side hustle instead of

organizing with your coworkers to take on the boss. It keeps you thinking that because you do creative

work it's okay that you work long hours and for little pay because if you're doing what you love

what do you have to complain about? It tells you that if you're a teacher or a nurse or a

non-profit worker whose job is to serve people that you organizing for your rights is a betrayal of

those people who you serve. The myth that we should love our jobs obscures the fact that only solidarity

and collective action can set us free. Today I'm talking to Sarah Jaffee about her new book,

Work Won't Love You Back, how devotion to our jobs keeps us exploited, exhausted, and alone.
