Today we got the news that Trump's criminal sentencing has been postponed until

after the 2024 election. Trump had been set to be sentenced less than two weeks from

now after having been found guilty of 34 felony counts in his

New York-Hush money case back in May.

The case had widely been seen as the only criminal case against Trump with the potential to cross the proverbial

finish line before the election. As of today we know that will not happen.

Trump will now be sentenced on November 26, three weeks after the election.

Here is how the judge overseeing the case, Judge Juan Mershahn, explained his reasoning

for that delay.

This matter is one that stands alone in a unique place in this nation's history.

Unfortunately, we are now at a place in time that is fraught with complexities

rendering the requirements of a sentencing hearing difficult to execute.

Thus the imposition of sentence will be adjourned to avoid any appearance, however unwarranted, that the proceeding has been affected by or seeks

to affect the approaching presidential election in which the defendant is a candidate.

The court is a fair impartial and a political institution.

Judge Mershaun offered a little more detail behind that reasoning, writing,

the public's confidence in the integrity of our judicial system demands a

sentencing hearing that is entirely focused on the verdict of the jury

and the weighing of aggravating and mitigating factors

free from distraction or distortion. The members of this jury

serve diligently on this case and their verdict must be respected and

addressed in a manner that is not diluted
