Summary

Today's episode is devoted to the Ideal Week exercise, a practice where you put your ideal week onto paper (or screen) using an hourly format. This can be done on paper using a template or an old vertical weekly planner, or on screen via an electronic calendar or even by writing on a pdf using an app. Sarah discusses nuances of this exercise, components she includes, and variations on the idea (Ideal Month, anyone?). A free ideal week template was included in the March newsletter - if you'd like a copy, feel free to send an email to [email protected]! Hello and welcome to best laid plans.

0:11.0

This is your host Sarah Hart Unger and this is the podcast where we talk all things planning and planning adjacent.

0:17.1

Today's episode is going to be focused on the ideal week.

0:22.1

This was inspired because I've been starting to do some planning for quintile two,

0:26.4

which we talked about last week, kind of my spring season.

0:29.7

And one of the rituals that I put into place at the beginning of every quintile is to take a look at my ideal week.

0:35.5

Now, confession, I haven't actually done that every single

0:38.5

quintile since I thought about doing this, but I do try to do it periodically. I got the idea

0:43.0

initially, I believe, from Michael Hyatt, because in the full focus planner, there is a two-page

0:48.4

spread in there for the ideal week. So his idea is to have people use that planner and that

0:53.0

system do it quarterly.

0:54.8

I've also heard my podcasting partner and time management expert Laura Vandercam talk about

0:59.4

creating an ideal week type schedule.

1:01.4

And I know I've seen it a couple other places too.

1:03.3

So a lot of people have had different interpretations and ideas related to the ideal week.

1:07.8

But I haven't heard any content specifically focused on this for a while,

1:12.4

and I thought it would be a timely thing to talk about, as many of us are probably kind of

1:16.8

finding our footing into the next season. The year is not so fresh anymore. We're trying to figure

1:21.3

out what routines are working and what might not be fitting in the way we envisioned it. And I

1:26.6

think that the ideal week exercise is a the way we envisioned it. And I think that the ideal week

1:28.3

exercise is a fantastic way to dive in and troubleshoot and think and analyze what is going on

1:35.4

so you can figure out what to change, what's working, and what's not. So we're going to talk about it
