Summary

This episode is sponsored by https://understandmyself.com/ and use code MP for 10% off! In today’s episode, Mikhaila hosts the evolutionary biologists Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying. They had an insightful discussion with Mikhaila about how in the most prosperous age of human history, suicide and illness rates are skyrocketing. Humans are more miserable than ever. How did that happen from an evolutionary perspective? Are the challenges of modern life really that hard? They also delved into humanity’s reaction to COVID, birth control, switching genders, monogamy, and religion. Watch this episode to see how evolution shapes our lives. Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying are former professors at Evergreen State College. The married couple were among the college’s most popular teachers. They specialized in evolutionary biology. Together, they authored A Hunter-Gatherer’s Guide to the 21st Century: Evolution and the Challenges of Modern Life, a book discussing why humans are miserable despite living in the most prosperous age in all of human history. too much of modernity imagines that any rule from the past is archaic and outdated, and

0:07.4

fact is some of them are, and some of them are outdated, but what they provided was necessary,

so we need to figure out some new rules. We can't just say, well, then, no rules is the best way

to go. You know, we talk in the book about a model for how it is that human beings move from one

niche to another when one discovers that the wisdom of the ancients doesn't apply to the current

environment. There's a natural process in which we bootstrap new ways of being, and so although

this predicament is unlike any transition humans made before, the toolkit for dealing with such

transitions is already present. Welcome to the Michaela Peterson podcast with Brett and Heather.

Evolution and the challenges of modern life. It gives information on how we can adapt to an

incredibly quickly changing society and how we're not really built for this kind of life,

and much more. It's kind of the culmination of their life's work. It's awesome. It's just been

released on the 14th and is available linked below. I love the work they do and think they're

1:20.7

amazingly brilliant. They have a very analytical way of thinking, and they're one of the

1:24.9

saner couple of voices that are out online right now. We spoke about evolution and biology and

1:30.8

men and women touched on the trans debate going on right now, monogamy versus polygamy. It was a

really fun conversation. I hope you enjoy this episode, and if you do, please be sure to hit subscribe.

nice to meet you guys finally. It's good to meet you as well. It does. Yeah, it feels like we've
