After spending four years in one month in the Middlesex County Juvenile Detention Center in North Runswick, New Jersey,

Scott Koloji, now 20 years old, has finally gone to trial.

I streamed the trial live on MJ Courts and local news outlet The Asbury Park Press provided extensive coverage of the quote, Long Branch murders,

making it possible for me to share developments with you.

If you'll recall, 16-year-olds Scott Koloji spent New Year's Eve Night 2017 with his family, his parents, grandparents, siblings, aunt and uncle and his brother's girlfriend.

The family ate dinner and watched the movie King Kong together downstairs, which ended at around 11.30pm.

According to the Defense's closing argument, Linda Koloji sent Scott upstairs to complete a project for school on floral arrangements,

so he could present it to the family after they counted down to midnight in 2018.

Instead, Koloji was arrested on New Year's Day 2018 in the shooting spree that killed his 44-year-old mother, Linda, his 42-year-old father, Steven Senior,

his 18-year-old sister Brittany and his grandfather's longtime companion Mary Schultz, who was 70 years old.

His grandfather, aunt, uncle, older brother and girlfriend were not shot.

Koloji's family told doctors and later the police that the teen had a flat affect, lacked emotion, specifically empathy and didn't comprehend the concept of consequences.

His family preferred to blame a benign brain abnormality diagnosed years ago that they believed was still an active tumor.

Psychologist Marina Santina interviewed Koloji as a defense expert witness, and she testified that he was acutely psychotic when he killed his family members and that he was in the early stages of schizophrenia.

To rebut her findings, the Monmouth County Prosecutors' Office hired high-profile forensic psychiatrist Dr. Park Dietz to be their expert witness in April 2018.

He is actually world famous, having consulted on or testified in numerous high-profile cases, starting with the attempted murder trial of John Hinckley Jr., who tried to assassinate President Reagan in 1981.

He missed the President, but shot and paralyzed press secretary James Brady instead, spawning the 1993 Brady Act, often called the Brady Bill, which began the process of FBI background checks being required to purchase a firearm.
