On December 1, 1997, 14-year-old Michael Carneal opened fire on his fellow students at Heath High School in West Paducah, Kentucky, killing 17-year-old Jessica James, 14-year-old Nicole Hadley and 15-year-old Kayce Steger, and 5 other students were wounded.

In September, 2022, Carneal became the first high-profile school shooter of the modern era to come up for parole, after spending 25-years incarcerated.
