This is one of Sorenzo's favorite parts of the job. Strong, who everyone calls Fats,

is patrolling a sunny, laughter-filled park on the west side of Chicago, decked out in

a neon yellow vest and a smile.

How you doing, man?

Yeah, all right. Fats is an anti-violence worker in the East Garfield Park neighborhood.

His job is to prevent shootings. Part of that prevention is just having a presence in

spots where violence is threatening to take hold.

We're down at Rockwell. It used to be a project that has been torn down and repealed, but

everybody still comes back down here and out. So we're down here doing a pop-up with

the church lighting a night event to keep the peace down here.

Rockwell Gardens stood for more than 40 years. A massive public housing complex with 16

story high rises, holding thousands of west hiders. Those high rises were controlled by

different gangs, who sold drugs out of them and battled each other for turf.

The city demolished Rockwell in the 2000s. Officials promised to build better communities

in its place, but that promise has been largely unfulfilled. So the former residents come

back here to rekindle that sense of community that was taken from them.

But when they get together, Fats tells me, the old ganglines come back too.

At the center of it all is a non-descript park with an even more non-descript name.

Park 574. It's a mostly empty grass field dotted with a few trees and a play structure.

Today the park is a wash in music. A giant speaker plays traditional cookout hits, while

kids frolic around a giant inflatable slide, and older folks play spades on fold-up tables.
