Summary

This week I spoke with American author Daniel Pinchbeck (Breaking Open the Head: A Psychedelic Journey into the Heart of Contemporary Shamanism and Notes from the Edge Time). Through his research Daniel has developed the hypothesis that shamanic and mystical views of reality have validity, and the modern world has forfeited an understanding of intuitive aspects of being in its pursuit of rational materialism. In this conversation we interrogate the notion of how we can change society for the better, looking at questions such as: What should and could the future look like? What have philosophers and academics hypothesised? What role does the hard problem of consciousness play in changing society? And what’s going on right now that could be inhibiting positive change—politically and culturally? How do we invent a new future? Let’s discuss.
