Summary

A decade ago, the idea of meeting with a therapist online seemed a bit too far-fetched for many people. There were concerns about everything from privacy to credibility. But online therapy has become mainstream over the past few years. In fact, the abundance of online therapy sites and additional services being offered over the past few years has left many people feeling overwhelmed by all the choices. And it’s no wonder why. Some online therapy sites take insurance. Others offer subscription services. Some sites allow you to message a therapist throughout the day while others offer video appointments only. Fortunately, there are many reputable providers who can treat a variety of mental health issues effectively online. Depression, anxiety, substance use disorders, and even relationship problems can be addressed with online treatment now.  It’s tough to sort through all the options, however, (especially when you’re stressed out, battling depression, or feeling extremely anxious). It can also be difficult to know whether online therapy is a good fit for you. So here's everything you need to know about online therapy. Learn more about your ad choices. Today I'm talking about online therapy.

0:55.3

I hear from so many people who have questions about how it works, whether it's as helpful as

1:00.7

in-person therapy, and the best way to find an online therapist. So today I'm going to tell you

1:06.9

what you need to know about online therapy, how to get the most from it, and when you

1:10.9

should opt for in-person therapy instead. But first, I just want to explain some of my personal

1:16.1

experiences with online therapy. I spent most of my career providing face-to-face therapy

1:21.2

in an office. When I became an author, I didn't have time to be a full-time therapist anymore,

1:25.8

so I offered some mental strength coaching, which often took place over the phone or via messaging. I also tested a lot of the

1:34.4

online therapy services. A few years ago, very well mine asked me to test the major online

1:39.9

therapy services as sort of a mystery shopper. At the time, I was a freelance writer for the site,

1:45.5

and I wasn't yet the editor-in-chief. So I took several months to personally test all the big

1:50.8

therapy sites that we had available then, which were the sites like Talkspace and BetterHelp.

1:55.7

And I'm really glad that I did that because I learned a lot about what it's like to talk to a

1:59.6

therapist via text messaging

2:00.8

or how video chatting with a therapist is different from talking to someone in person.

2:06.4

The pandemic definitely made online therapy much more mainstream, so it's grown over the years.

2:12.2

And the good news is it's also made insurance companies recognize that online therapy is a

2:16.9

legitimate way for people to get

help. Some of the sites have expanded into offering additional services, like psychiatry. So if you're
