This week marks a historical turning point in Russia's war with Ukraine.

As we speak, the diplomatic logjam is breaking up in front of our eyes.

President Trump has delivered on his pledge to bring the conflict to an end. Following an apparently

very cordial 19-minute phone call with Vladimir Putin, talks have begun between Washington and Moscow

to stop the war that Russia started almost exactly three

years ago. At the same time, we've received stark clarification of the concessions that America

expects Ukraine to agree to in order to achieve peace. They're spelled out in a tough statement

by new defense secretary Pete Hegeseth, which left Europe in no doubt that the

US is no longer to be depended on to underwrite security for the continent.

Reaction to these developments has been delight in Moscow and dismay among the Ukraine's friends,

with some comparing it to the British and French sellout of Czechoslovakia to Adolf Hitler in the Munich

agreement of 1938. Well, you'll hear our views later, but first, let's spell up what we know.
