0:05.1	Vittenberg as we are trekking through Luther's life and this week we are taking a
0:09.3	break from looking at the events and some of the places in Luther's life to talk about some of his books.
0:16.4	Today we are going to look at a set of writings that are very crucial to Luther and come at a rather
0:21.2	important time.
0:22.8	They are called the three treatises,
0:25.2	and they were written in the fall of 1520.
0:27.6	Before the three treatises were written,
0:29.5	Luther received the Papal Bull.
0:31.4	This is the Exurge Domine letter that comes from Leo the 10th. It
0:36.6	declares Luther to be a wild boar loose in the Gospel of Jesus Christ trampling
0:42.1	underfoot. Gospel and the Church.
0:46.1	That's what the Pope thought of Luther.
0:48.0	What did Luther think of the Pope in the Papal Bull?
0:49.8	Well, he ignored it and then he burned it. Of course all this set the stage for the
0:54.1	Diet or the Diet at Verms in 1521 and in between those in the fall of 1520 he
1:00.1	writes the three treatises. The first of the three treatises is his address
1:05.0	to the German nobility or to the German princes.
1:07.6	He opens that book with this line,
1:09.6	the time for silence is past
1:11.9	and the time to speak has come. And in this book he
1:16.1	calls upon the German princes to play a role in bringing reform to the church. He
