Today we get to speak to retired agent Michael D. Patoro, who served in the FBI for 30 years.

the evolution of the Leagat program. Mike's field office assignments were the Tampa Division

in the Orlando Resident Agency, the Milwaukee Division, and 15 years in the San Francisco

Division working Russian counterintelligence. In 1987, he was posted to the U.S. Embassy in Manila, where he set up the

first Legat office in the Philippines, where he worked fugitive matters, counterterrorism matters,

and the New York prosecution of the former president of the Philippines, Berdinand Marcos. In 1990, Mike was transferred to the U.S.

consulate in Hong Kong, where he served as Legat with regional responsibility to include

India, Sri Lanka, and Nepal. In 1992, he traveled to Beijing, China, and initiated a working relationship between the FBI and the Chinese Ministry of Public Security on Criminal Justice Matters.

Mike received the Director's Award for his achievements in China.

In 1994, he had the honor of being the Bureau's first Legat posted to the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, Russia.

For his final assignment, FBI director Louis Free appointed Mike DiProtoro as the deputy assistant director in charge of international affairs.

In this role, he oversaw the Bureau's

LEGAAP program and FBI personnel assigned to U.S. embassies worldwide. After his retirement,

Mike was hired by Goldman Sachs as a regional security director based in London. he continues to work for clients as a consultant
