On March 19th, 2014, school officials in Washington, DC went to a local homeless shelter to follow up on an 8-year-old student named Relisha Rudd due to her having missed more than two weeks of school. For several weeks, they’d reportedly been told by Relisha’s mother that she was under a doctor’s care. They were stunned to find out that the so-called doctor was actually a custodian at the shelter and that none of Shamika’s family members had seen her for 18 days.
