The Hello and welcome to mini episode 395 of real life ghost stories and I have one spooky story for you today and our story actually comes from August the 21st, 2024. It is another one of those stories that I mislabeled and has been sitting in a folder in the

wrong place. So today's stories come from Joanna. I grew up in Laconia, New Hampshire in the US.

Near my childhood house was Ahern State Park. A beautiful area of forest, crisscrossed with trails and

running alongside the shore of one of our large lakes. Behind the forested area, there are a series of

decaying buildings. Originally built in 1901, these buildings started their life as the Laconia State School,

an asylum for people considered to be a danger to society due to mental differences.

Especially at its founding, the school mostly accepted children.

During the Great Depression, many of the residents were admitted primarily because their parents could not afford to feed and care for them.

As you can imagine, the facility quickly became overcrowded and subjected its occupants to upsetting conditions to say the least.

Parents of occupants sued the facility for poor treatment and the court ordered

it to reduce its load of occupants, but the school instead closed in the 1970s. This would be enough

of a difficult history to account for some paranormal activity. But after the facilities were used

as a state school and asylum, they were converted to a prison

called the Lakes Region facility.

Again, the facilities were quickly overcrowded.

Prisoners were responsible for repairing the ageing buildings when they broke apart.
