Let me say that again.

30,000 pounds.

That's what the Guest of Claims' Hero Word charged the Normans for the return of the

war-like Abbott Turald.

30,000.

It's such an obviously inflated number that it almost feels like the scribe is looking

directly in the camera and saying, hey, don't forget, some of this story is legendary,

because there is no way that this was the actual sum that Hero Word was charging.

When William broke the back of Ealy by demanding an extortionate sum from the monks, he called

for a thousand pounds of gold in silver.

So if Hero Word really was demanding 30 times that amount, he was either demanding that

they hand over the actual moon, or the scribe of the Guesta, reportedly Leofridge the

Deacon, was just being really dramatic.
