General Washington gave command to John Sullivan in 1779 to outfit and lead an expedition into the Seneca-Cayuga homeland. It will be a scorched earth campaign that will leave almost the entire population of both the Seneca and Cayuga Nations homeless. Destitute of any food or clothing thousands will head to Fort Niagara for shelter.

1:08.8 | of raids into Pennsylvania and modern New York, which was mainly |
1:12.7 | Iroquois homeland, but was also on the border of a lot of these frontier settlements. And in doing |
1:17.8 | so, raiding all of these towns, pressure is being put on the newly formed United States Congress |
1:23.9 | and particularly George Washington to do something about it. These people are on the |
1:28.3 | borders of the frontier and they are the ones that are having their homes burned and pillaged. |
1:33.0 | So people are starting to stay Washington. If you want us to side with you, you better get up here |
1:37.4 | and do something about this. So we see things from the other side. Brandt is trying to defend |
1:42.0 | his Mohawk territory and Seneca and Kiyuga territory because they |
1:46.3 | realize that they need to go on the offensive if they want to prevent any more encroachment upon their lands. |
1:51.4 | And at the same time, the Oneida are found in this horrible situation where they end up being allied to the Americans |
