Summary

A few months ago, someone mentioned that a dude had walked to Crestone from Pueblo — which is a SERIOUS walk over some very rugged mountains — and that he was some kind of Sasquatch expert. I was intrigued, but I have to admit that I assumed the guy was a wild-eyed wayward soul who’d had a bit too much psilocybin and not enough common sense. Then I met Mateo at a party and after chatting with this totally chill, reasonable, obviously smart dude for a while, I realized … wait a minute, THIS is the Squatch dude? So I’d like to introduce you to yet another fascinating Crestonian. You can learn more about Mateo and his exploits at modernexplorer.me.

Intro music “Brightside of the Sun,” by Basin and Range. “Forest,” by David Beckingham; Outro: “Smoke Alarm,” by Carsie Blanton.

Time to pay the man.

0:41.4

Yeah. Hey, if you have a lot of student loans and there's a possibility

0:47.9

that they're going to be forgiven, you might want to check your state laws. I was reading something yesterday about this.

0:56.8

And they're like seven or eight states in this country that are planning to tax, this is so fucked, they're going to tax as income the forgiven student loan amount.

1:14.0

So if you owe $100,000 in student loans and you live in one of these states,

1:20.0

if the Biden administration is able to pull off their plan of forgiving those loans,

1:28.0

your state is going to want to collect tax on that $100,000 as if it were income.

1:35.0

Man, I mean, what the fuck?

1:38.0

Since Ronald Reagan, the federal government taxes tax is Social Security because he cut taxes for

1:48.0

wealthy individuals from 70-something percent to 28 percent or whatever it was and one of the ways of recovering

1:55.7

that money was to tax Social Security as income. So you're taxing money that the federal government is giving to old people so that they can

2:06.5

fucking retire and survive.

2:09.9

You're taxing that money.

2:11.4

Oh, come on. Anyway, just a heads up. Check it out. It's only seven or

2:18.6

eight states, but I thought that was a pretty crazy thing that they were going to tax that student loan income and

2:29.0

forgiven student loan debt and also I mean people say all this stuff like oh it's moral hazard like they

2:35.7

shouldn't forgive the student loans the only argument that makes any sense to me

2:41.0

is people who say oh come on I worked really hard to pay back my

2:45.2

loans and now you're just going to forgive them that's not really an argument that's an

2:49.8

emotion and I understand it and I respect it but the stuff about moral hazard oh if you
