Summary

Calories on menus are now mandatory for companies with 250 staff or more, but nutritionally, and psychologically, what does this mean? Does existing research even support the initiative? The government have brought this in to try help tackle the obesity epidemic, but big Qs are being raised. We cover the research, eating disorders, the option of having the option, and the 'meta' conversation in all this - why not put restrictions on the companies making the money here?

Everyone been able to radio hope you have an awesome day whatever you're doing we thought we'd pick up on something that's been in the news recently we hope we're not too far behind the curve here but calories which is a key component of kind of nutrition and the things that we are now on restaurant menus all round sort of the UK don't know if it's gone further a field.

0:24.0

But I think it's an interesting talking point because it's obviously divided opinion quite a bit I did a bit of conversing on social media and some people gave some really sort of valuable insight into sort of some tweaks and stuff that could be made to the initiative to make it kind of more approachable for people and minimize the kind of downsides as well.

0:47.0

So that's the topic of today's show but as ever with these types of shows toms with me hey Tom.

0:54.0

Hey Ben good to be good to be here I'm looking forward to this one and I think it's a really interesting topic.

1:00.0

Yeah hopefully it's relevant to everyone as well and anyone that's interested in nutrition which you probably are if you have listened to the show for a while will be interested in this topic but just before me and Tom started we started to talk about just sort of fitness and training and stuff

1:16.0

because Tom shared a video of some dude that went on a steroid cycle and literally transformed himself like beyond recognition in the space of four weeks we've got talking about kind of training and the effects of drugs and then the effect on your mind and stuff.

1:34.0

And Tom said he was like I've just got lat cramp and then I was like oh I've actually trained to ice in two days today which is the first time in 18 months so I've got a little bit of glute doms.

1:46.0

That's really cool. Are you still obviously I'm guessing starting like it's sort of working you were but how are you how are you feeling like during after the sessions now.

1:54.0

I feel okay today I feel a little bit off but I had broken sleep with the kids so it's hard to say so I went and played golf with a friend a couple of weeks ago who's also a strength and conditioning coach and I sort of talked him through my problem I was like if I do cardio I'm absolutely fine if I do any kind of weights and go anywhere near fatigue it just absolutely cripples me.

2:18.0

So he goes well why don't you do weights but kind of in the cardio rep zone so like do 30 reps or whatever the problem when you're doing with body weight is you feel quite weak which I am it's actually quite hard to do that like if I do body weight squats I'm done after like 15 reps like I'm naked like I haven't got the strength anymore so I was sort of playing around in my home gym and modifying what I could do with certain bits of kit I've got.

2:44.0

So I did sort of like a bit of a chesty triceps type thing just basically two little bits on my chest one of my triceps literally 15 minutes in my home gym and like felt fine.

2:56.0

Yesterday I did some like body weight glute bridges I was able to get up to 30 35 reps and some split squats at 20 reps so there's literally I'm just staying well away from fatigue really high rep trying to build up a real basic base because yeah I you know I started to do like a couple of sets of push ups and the next day I was just felt absolutely terrible but I've just had my test or I still run retested and it's starting to come up again from the treatment that I'm under.

3:26.0

So hopefully you should go in so that hopefully you should help so hopefully I'm getting somewhere now.

3:31.0

That's really cool I'm really happy to hear it and all like training has been like a really important part of my life for a really long time and I can imagine that for people like yourself who I mean you've been doing training longer than I have.

3:44.0

I can imagine it feels like something that you've not necessarily made as part of your identity in a negative way but just it is something that you do it's like it's part of the life that you lead.

3:55.0

I can imagine losing that's been quite difficult so yeah I'm genuinely really happy to hear you back.

4:00.0

Thanks dude it's odd taking such a long break off training you're definitely able to readjust your relationship with it what it kind of means to you.

4:09.0

So I became quite happy like just walking and whatever but you know it's probably a character desire that I've developed over time that I want to be quite athletic I enjoy it.

4:23.0

I like having a certain amount of muscle I like feeling strong like even simple shit like carrying two kids up the road like it would just knock on me out and to know that I can get my strength back and like.

4:36.0

But again it's all down to personal desire you know what what you want to look like feel like how you want to perform and I think once you've had a certain level of performance.

4:48.0

You probably always want to try and maintain that for for yourself but it's nice to have a period of time off because I think from experience speaking with older individuals.

4:59.0

Most people do struggle with aging to a degree and you know training is not as easy as it was like you get sore all that kind of stuff so it almost feels like me having a break gives me a bit more realism of what aging might be in terms of training and stuff but.
